And I'm just so grateful that you're here. And of course, I've got a really amazing guest for you and a really cool conversation coming up. So there's a couple things you might want to listen for because Donna Piper and I are going to be talking about her experience working with me to improve her SEO for her website. If you're interested in SEO, of course, this is going to be a fun conversation. But also if you have case studies on the brain, this, the way that I've organized our conversation is very much going to flow like a case study interview could flow for you as well. So you'll hear the types of questions to ask and just like a way that you could structure your case study interview if you want to. And with that, let me give you a quick intro before I bring Donna on. Donna! Hi friend! Hi, how are you? I'm so excited to be here. Thank you. excited to have you. I was going to say I'm happy that I'm not laughing anymore. We just had like a breakdown for two minutes. It was comical. Oh my gosh, I am stoked to have you here. Thank you so much for joining me and also just being willing to share about what it was like working with me. Yeah, it's easy. It'll be an easy conversation. Yeah, oh, I'm excited for it. But of course, I'm gonna hit you with the question that I ask all of my guests. Please know there's no wrong answer. And here we go. Which do you believe is the most important for sales? SEO, storytelling, or social proof? Hmm. Can I do all three? A very nice way with a case study is to loop in storytelling, SEO, and the social proof. But I think it's all three. I think, you know, for selling, there's a little bit of all of it, but it's also the authentic connection as well. So with all of this, It is also your kind of intention behind it, right? You know, you do this lovely SEO and all the case studies and all that stuff, but the intention is because you, but your approach is fun, right? It's still your personality. It's not just like, you know, I did all these things. You leave your personality in it. So they also get to know you when you write your case study. Yeah, for sure. I like that you said fun and you said authenticity and those are two things that keep coming up when people are talking about their answers for this question, so I like that. Good job. Brava. Alright, let's go straight into SEO. And really where I'd like to start is do you remember what sparked your interest in addressing or fixing your SEO for your site? Yes, like I like social media for like the fun social media, business social media. You know, there's lots to keep up with unless you're a social media strategist and that's your deal, right? Or your influencer and it's like camera. But I really wanted to have some like simple structure in my website and have something to support me behind there, whether I'm like, you know. really visible on social media or not. I wanted my website to do more work and I wanted the technology that's available to us to do some more of the heavy lifting to get people there. And then it's my job to interest them and make it worthwhile for them to stay or click, but to get the traffic there like anything, like how do you get seen? So that's, and I... knew the term forever and there's many different May Day tags and all that stuff. But to do it in a way that like, you know, what do I search for? So I needed help to be like, I know I need SEO and I didn't want to go to a company because it's a whole thing, right? When you do a company, you know, they have to get to know you maybe. And then I don't know what they're doing. You know, they could say they optimized all this stuff, but I don't know. I also had. websites before we click a button and gets optimized. So, you know, that world beyond what I could see in the SAO was a little bit more mysterious in a way that I didn't, I enjoy mystery, but not in like technology. Yeah, not with your business, not when it comes to like, you know, the thing that's bringing in money and allowing you to help people. Yeah, so I'm like, I need to understand it more. I need to educate myself enough to know what to look for and not to look for. And if I do hire someone eventually to do any of this magical stuff, then I need to know how they're actually serving me or not. The terms need to make sense to me, right? Exactly, because if they don't make sense to you, then it's kind of like, well, what's the point? Because... Okay, just do it. But then, you know, and then I hear not horror stories, well, some of it, but people that spend tons of money on these well-intentioned marketing companies, and then they never get the optimization that they say they're going to get. So they spend a lot of money, but the ROI is not great for something that, you know, really if you're searching stuff, then it's one of the things that's... would ideally pop up. Yeah, for sure. And I agree with you. There's too many times where I've either simply heard of people sharing their stories and really the one that sticks out the most to me is one of my friends ended up hiring a marketing agency that said they were going to address SEO and she was paying them $15,000 a month and nothing was really happening. Nothing was clear. answers weren't being given. And so of course, we as humans, we want to believe the best in people. So she's like, well, maybe there's something I'm missing, or maybe there's just some piece of this that I don't understand. But they weren't even communicating back with her. Oh, this is what we're doing. This is what we found. This is how this is going to help nothing. So I can't even imagine spending, you know, thousands of dollars a month, even if it's not $15,000 a month, spending thousands of dollars a month to a company or even a person where you don't even understand exactly what's happening, that doesn't make you feel good and then it doesn't make you want to then go work with someone else in the future because you already feel like you've been burned. That's what happens to me a lot is I inherit a lot of people who have worked with SEO experts or agencies, they've been burned and they're re-establishing that trust with me, which ironically also happened a lot in my massage practice. I would get people who had been to not the best massage therapists and then they come to me and they're like, oh, this is what it can be like. So you're the rehab SEO, P person, like come back to build trust in SEO or massage with B, Miss Brittany. But it's true, because like, so, you know, you really do SEO because you want leads and each lead costs anything. So whether you advertise, whether you do a blog, whether you do whatever, you know, every dollar you spend on your marketing, you would like that to somehow turn into lead money generation. So if you're spending $15,000. on not like not being optimized at all or not working, that's like month after month, that money could go somewhere else in order to get you leads, right? So it's like, you know, and that's the thing. Like I think SEO with all of this, like how do you get seen? Like it's the age old marketing question, like you have this great thing, how are you, how are people finding you? And there's so many more opportunities now. but they're a little bit more tricky as well, you know? and it is like, you know, the people say like build it and they will come You kind of have to tell them where to go. They need an address. They need some directions They need some incentive to go there. So oh, yeah One thing I want to clarify is you hadn't worked with anybody else before for SEO. How do you? No, no, I haven't done it. I mean, I think I made all the marketing mistakes. If I ever go into business coaching, I'll have a list of things not to do. But, you know, my approach was like, oh, you know, I need a website, whatever I, I personally, because most of my business has always been historically referrals, like when I was a plotties instructor, a therapist and everything, it was you had a website because you had a website to be like, this is where I am in the world, like physical location sort of thing, or oh, or how to contact me. Even though if there was information up, I wasn't using that to get people on the internet to find me to come get me. So I was like, no, and then, you know, optimization with SEO has changed, right? So. what Google has done over the last 25 years, even in the last five years with everyone going back online, there's much more emphasis on that. You know, Google ads, you know what I mean? It keeps changing and evolving and the more tech that were online, then the more data they have to find different areas. Right? So what YouTube was and Instagram was in the beginning, how they use SEO now, which they really weren't, you know, they were kind of, I mean, everyone's always gathering data on you. Right. Yeah. how do you really hone that in and find what people are searching for? So I never really thought of that, but I was like, okay, I really want my website to work for me. Mm-hmm, exactly. So, alright, you figured out you wanted to tackle SEO. Why me? Um, well, we met in another group copywriting. I don't even know. But what I liked about you is that even though I like you as a human, but your approach to, and that is also very important, you know, for me to work with people that I like. And my experience with some tech people, maybe more on the website, say, so if you're a website designer, no shade, but, um. I want like, you know, I know what I want and how I describe it is like, you know, very much like with no education with the terms of like, I want this, you know, I want these things to come together. And I kept on running into tech people that wanted me to talk in their language, but I don't know their language to talk to. So it was always frustrating. So what I really was appealing about you and what is appealing about you is that you make it very simple. Like these are all of these websites and all these extensions and all these things you could do to help, but have fun with it and put it in and see. So, and you're really upfront, well, like this is all testing. Like, yeah, there are certain things that you could do, but you really have to test out. the words and the phrases in order to, um, and put them in places, like heading one, like the header number one and all that stuff. Like, you know, I'm not a website designer. So when you do the, um, just built for you, you just like plug and play stuff. That's not obvious, like fonts and sizes and stuff as far as what gets pulled for SEO, right? So learning that stuff, like really. taking like basic stuff and just making it simple and easy to do. And that was, um, and then a million other reasons why. But we'll get to those along the, along the pathway. I don't, I don't want to dump everything in the beginning. And then you're just going to duck out of the podcast. No, that's, I really appreciate you saying that because that is one thing that I really, really try to make this topic that is boring and dry and just like a snooze fest usually. It can be fun. It can be easy. It can be simple. And I really love having that reflected back to me because then it's like, yes, I'm doing the work in the way that I want to do the work and I'm helping people in the way I want to. So thank you for that. I really appreciate that. And in addition, I think because you've done it like, and you do it for yourself and for, you know, your people around you, right? And you love it, like it excites you, you know, like you like to research, you like to figure out the words, you like to do that so that you love what you do as well as reflected like, oh, it's not just like, you know, it's not a task or a skill that you know what to do. but you actually enjoy it and you think it's fun. So then it becomes fun for the person working with you. Yeah, that's true. That's good to hear that it bleeds across since the Zoom call, I guess. That's very weird. Very weird. Yes, it does. like goes. So I guess explaining the project that we worked on, you had your website, it was on one website host, we went in and we updated and modified some of the SEO stuff in there. And just like you talked about, we, we discovered keywords, I did keyword research, I showed you where to plug them in, I gave you some examples and some suggestions, which you totally ran with, which is like, amazing. I love it when people are like, Oh, cool, I'll try that. And from there you ended up moving your website to a different host. So you wanted to share a little bit about, I guess, just like what that process was like for you and how we interacted and how we went about the SEO stuff from what you remember. So my first website was hosted on Wix, which was good. I chose that platform because when I had a in-person studio, that was one of the best ones with an app to integrate scheduling. So that website is very good for if you have in-person where you could schedule and do classes and stuff. But because I had different CRMs, So I had different things with like, um, I really liked MailChimp. I went over to ConvertKit. I didn't like that as much, but all of my tech stuff was all over. And the more I got in and I would learn about stuff, I, for not really wanting to be a tech person, I love new tech and technology. Like I love apps to have the latest stuff that interests me. Um, but to find out all the nuances, like I like to figure out how to, you know, use it and then. all the cool stuff you could really do. I'm like, I don't really care. You know, but so I wanted a platform that had everything in it. So I went to Kajabi and I had started that in the beginning but I thought it was too expensive. But I think over the times of switching platforms and paying 20, 30, $40 here and there, it was probably, I should have just stayed with it. And I know Kajabi has a different like. I don't know if it's a hidden, it's a platform within a platform, but there's SEO is definitely different. There is a way to optimize on their programming, but I think it pulls and it crawls differently from my understanding, but you know, that keeps on getting changed and upgraded. So it was harder for me, like it was kind of a bummer. Like I did all this work. I got all the header one header. whatever, two threes and I did that. And then I needed to transfer into another language. But the cool thing is I already had some of that information. So as long as I tried to figure out where in Kajabi their header was, one was with the main thing I wanted to put out in the search world. And then do the rest. So I think it's pretty good. And the one thing that Kajabi had, which they all have, But when I went over there, I started a blog. So that, I used a lot of SEO tips, tricks, what have you, so to put it on the blog. And then I was able to go to whatever that Google thing is, where you put your stuff in an optimum, whatever. I don't know what that is. thing for keyword research or something else. It's on Google and you put the link in there and then what's that called? I don't even know. be Ubersuggest where I've... I don't know. It's the one on Google. It's the, you actually, it's a Google extension. You go in and you optimize it there. You'll have to show me later. This sounds fun. Yeah, I think you're the one. I'm sure I'm explaining it wrong. But you're the one that told, yeah, you list it there. You list your pages. oh, Google search console where after you've published your blog. Okay. this is a good tip. So after you've published your blog, you want to make sure it doesn't just automatically get picked up by the internet so that they can show it in your search pages. What you want to do is actually submit it for indexing to Google Search Console. And I need to make that tutorial. Hopefully by the time this interview goes out, I have that out on one of like the Friday episodes. So, but I'll make sure it's linked below whenever I do publish that. But yeah, that's a great point. And I forgot about that too. within our work within working on this project of SEO for your website, you went through the how to blog with SEO email course. So you learned even more about how to like actually apply the stuff that we had talked about with like the keyword research and then coming up with the blog topic and optimizing your blog to get found. Yes. So, because especially because Kajabi has a different maybe cross system, who knows? So then if the blog is optimized, then at least a little bit more traffic would be coming my way. That was the intent behind there. Yeah, and that's one thing that I like to let people know, which is that you can have whatever website host you have. You could have these like really random ones that I've never heard of before until I have clients and I'm like, I've never heard that name before in my life. You could have Squarespace, you could have Wix, you could have Kajabi. The main thing is, the reassuring part of it is that as you're working with me or any SEO provider, you're going to be given this information and as long as you have the keywords in the strategic places that they need to assured like, okay, at least I've got something out there working for me. But like you said as well, SEO is kind of like, it's you're hypothesizing and then you're testing your hypothesis and you're looking at the data to see what's going on. During the process of like working together, the experience, was there anything that you really liked that really stood out to you? Um, with SAO or you or the whole thing or just, you know, thank you. I guess I was thinking more in the lines of how I delivered the information or how things were explained or if you had any aha moments around SEO too. Um, I did. I know that like, so for me, SEO is like, okay, it's not as foreign for me, you know? It's like, okay, I can figure out keywords. I could figure out like, you know, I always, I have a therapy background. So my tendency in marketing and business is not to get inside of the heads of my people and what would they be doing? Because somehow like, as a coach, you're like, Yeah, let's, you know, like it's a different vibe, but you're trained as a therapist to just allow everything to happen and not be invasive because you want them to have like transfer and experience. But as coach, you don't have that. You wanna be in there with them and be like, what are you doing? Like, come on, let's motivate you. So, cause coaching is motivating, it's positive. It's a different deal. And putting that, those words and trying to be like, oh, what would they be searching for? I would always be like. I don't know what they'd be searching for. Like, I don't know. So I really had to work on like, okay, so what are some of the things I talk about and what is a possibility if someone would wanna search with? And then play with, put those in. And you helped me come up with a huge list of those. So that helped a lot to be like, oh, that's something that I never thought that they would search for. So just by offering that list of words, and like helped me change my mindset, like, oh, okay, that's not so. big of a deal. And then I could do blog topics based on those things. And then the other thing I really liked is that at one point for however my brain works I need it centralized, you brought all of your amazing worksheets and really had the framework of to step by step of how to do it. Like it's you know when you're not a person that is really research oriented. I mean, I am, like I wrote a thesis, I went to school. It's not like I can't, but it's not what I enjoy doing. So that you just have step by step, like do this here, then do this next, then do this next. And then you brought it into one big flow chart of information, then it kind of helps because then it's one centralized location. So that was a really big help to be like, okay, just start here and then do the next step. and then just do the next step. And then once it's all filled out, then this is what you do with all the information. Because I've gone through many different courses and people, it's like, yeah, you find the keywords that people are searching for. Okay, cool, great, now what? But how do I really utilize them in a way that actually gets people to come into my website? Like, how do I write a blog, where that? And you don't wanna kill them with the... SEO dumping word searches, right? Like you just want a little bit of that and then make it a real story or a real blog post or whatever that you're giving them some information for education or what have you. So to find that, to figure out what to actually do with the keyword searches was very like, oh, okay, that's cool, that's not so bad. Like, and then indexing and writing, I'm like, oh, it's kind of fun. Oh, and the... tiny picture thing, you know, because tech is so interesting, like as simple as so, it's so user friendly, but it's not, like once you get in there, like, oh, my photo for this isn't going to be the right dimensions, or it's too big of a file, right? So how do I do that? And then the text images for scrolling for blogs to learn. all that stuff because I knew it was possible. I just didn't know what's the best practice because then there's also best practices on top of there too. And now with Google with the email stuff or you know what I mean? There's like, you know, right? It never stops. It never stops. And I'm really glad that you brought that up. So the bringing all of the steps into one document that you were talking about, that change has stayed inside the How to Blog with SEO email course, which I'll make sure is linked below. I run it at least three times a year. But you and another student that went through, you were both like, can we just have all of this in one place? And I was like, oh yeah, that'd be really smart. Let me do that. So I've organized it now where I give that big workflow template resource earlier on in the training. And then it's like, okay, this is gonna be the thing you're gonna work from, but let's pick it apart. So here's how you do keyword research. This is where those things go. So that was a really helpful, I like learning from my students to see what's gonna work best for them or my clients, whatever the case may be. So that was a really, really helpful tip that you and the other student pointed out. And I'm really grateful for that. And I'm happy to hear that you're still using it because I'm even using it. It's like my favorite template to work from. Yeah, it just makes it, because you've laid it out so plainly in a very beautiful way that it's, and then just to have one place to go, be like, okay, I'm gonna write this thing here, all the elements I need, and I could go back to it, and then just keep doing that, repeating that process over and over. You know, our brains do like simplicity, and they like to be told what to do. even if we rebel, which I'm a rebeler, but it's like, okay, like, okay, if I have to do SEO, then okay, just go here, just go here and do this. And that's what's really wonderful about what you give because I know you do done for you work, you do it both ways. But just, even if like, eventually, I'm going to be giving on my SEO over to you. But I also need to understand it. It's kind of like hiring a VA or hiring someone too. Like if you don't know the systems that you want, it's harder for you to get what you would need support from someone else if you don't actually know what systems to use, right? So learning that no matter who's out there, like even if you have a huge company or, you know, and you have someone else do your SEO, just to have a little bit more knowledge going through a course with Brittany, just to have knowledge about it. So then you know what to ask and what to look for your company that you're having some accountability to. And then also you're not totally relying on someone else for your business in a way. Like, you know, you take your responsibility. Like, you know, when I don't know stuff, I can't hold other people to make it happen for me. So if I know I can ask questions and make it what I need. I'm going to make sure I'm going to make a note to myself to make sure that I link in the show notes the episode I did on SEO mistakes, because that you brought up a really great point which is sometimes we don't even know what to ask to vet whether or not we want to work with this person or with this agency. It doesn't even have to be SEO stuff, just like anything, so I'll make sure that's linked below. But you also brought up another question, kind of we're navigating there. So let's say someone is listening to us just chit chatting and they're like, yeah, eventually. Like, what would you say to them? I would say don't put this one off. Like of all the things in your business, you know, yeah, you need to, okay, always just sell, right? You wanna make money, you have to sell. If you're not selling, you're not making money. And selling isn't like tricking anyone or whatever, it's just having conversations. And you're offering a solution to what they need. So if you're wanting SEO to increase your sales, You want SEO to increase your leads. So, and you want something to work. If you have a website, if you are on Instagram, if you're in anywhere where there's keywords ever, which the keywords are everywhere, I highly recommend just don't put off SEO. Understand it to some degree, whether you get the list of like what the questions to ask, but really try to understand this and try to understand how to index and how to do stuff because... The internet will do a lot for you, but you also have to know where to go to make it do a lot for you. So just having that understanding will just help you get more traffic to you in a way that is not so like, like once you do it, there's time to do it, there's time to learn it, but once you do it and it's on there, then you could start testing it and tweaking it. And it's not like you have to really vary, you know, maybe a keyword here or there, right, for your website. But with the blogs and everything else, then that's something constantly that you're telling Google and the other, I mean, I know there's Bing and a few other ones, but mainly Google is the guy, right? So you're telling Google that you're also putting more out there. So the more you put out there, it kind of helps them find you too. So it helps your ranking. So. Um, don't wait on SEO, learn what it is and then learn how you could, it could specifically benefit you to get more people knocking at your door so you can have those sales conversations. Yeah, I couldn't agree more. As we're wrapping up, is there anything else that you want to share or feel like is important that you want to just like get out there? Um, let's see, you know, the copy is important. Marketing's important. Like everything's important. But I think if you can figure out a way, like you teach Brittany, which this really is, to put SEO in your copy. So again, it's always working for you because there's great copy out there. But if that's some, if it's not also... has included in your keywords. I think that was a big thing. They kind of have to be both, you know, and copy is a whole other topic. And I know you do that really well. But having your personality, having some keywords in there to do it, then having just really understanding your client to make that happen. I mean, it's a lot. I mean, you know, especially for me, that's just like, Uh, that didn't have to do that. But when you have a referral based business, you don't have to really tell them. You just have friends be like, Oh, just go work with her. I had a really great experience and then they come and then, you know, they figure it out. But really learning that as a skill and having the SEO part in your copy is, um, is a game changer because then you don't have to work as hard on the, in the website piece on the stuff that lives. on the internet for a while that you don't really change as much. Yeah, definitely. Couldn't agree more. I definitely want to have you tell people where they can find you, but I guess first maybe this would like fit better here. So that's mainly the focus of what I do and relationships are messy, relationships are fun, relationships are all about growth. So it's... Most of the time what I do is I help people find out if they really want to be in a relationship and if they do, what are some of the things they can do that needs to be healed, needs to be just their mindset around things need to change or their perspective or maybe they need more confidence, you know, or just they don't think they have enough time, you know, all the things. And then I guide them through a program that I have for like six months to help them. kind of heal what they need to heal and then support them when they're going through the process because it's one thing to be like okay like I'm good I'm ready and then you know you start going out into the world dating and doing your stuff and then all of these old behaviors come up so then you need to just have some support to create new behaviors so I do that with my all my years of training and stuff but I mainly I really like to use the Akashic Records Everyone has a record. So it's an energetic blueprint of every thought, deed, word, any behavior you ever had or having or will have. But it's something that's not faded. It's something that's not like, this is what's gonna happen to you. And it's really just information that's personal to you. So it makes the healing process and the direction process and like some of the guidance process much more exciting for the person because it's more practical. And you can find me website. So not only has Donna come to me for SEO, I've gone to her for Akashic Records readings. And I loved it so much and me with my like brain in the way I like to try to decipher information for people. I need to go back and update that because we've had so many more sessions since then but I will link that blog below and then as you were talking and explaining what the Akashic records are, have you ever read this book called The Midnight Library by Matt Haig? It's I feel like if people ever want to get a really good understanding of what the records are, that's a really good book. I'll link that below too. But it's kind of like, like you said, every possibility that could happen, all the stuff that is happening and has happened. And you know, there have been some really tough moments in my life. I'll make sure that's linked below. but there have been some like traumatic things that have happened in my life that I've been able to work with Donna and kind of just like cut that tether so I don't have that emotional story that's like playing in the background all the time.
